Last year I think we had deer taken with pre 64, I thought I would start a Winchester kill page for 2015. Your model 70's, 71's, 94's, model 12's you name. If It's taken with this year let's see it.

This is a very old Kansas pronghorn I had to work hard to get. Not a giant but a wise old buck I was happy to take.

The weather changed the day we started our hunt from 80's and 90's to 40's and 50's with winds up to 35 mph. These pronghorn get out in the middle of big green wheat fields and are very hard to get close to and with the wind it made longer shots not very advisable.

First day the pronghorn were laying low and didn't even see one until 3 pm with no chance of a stalk that day. Day two we got started late but were able to get in several stalks. After one failed stalk my buddy was able to connect on a nice buck that popped out of nowhere in the crp at less than fifty yards with his pre 64 model 70 in 300 H&H.

I had two failed stalks on day two on the same buck and this lone ole buck was very smart, he knew every move and counter move and just plain beat me twice.

Day three our last day and with our schedules I had time for one stalk and we were able to find a herd we put to bed the night before but they were untouchable where the were. They were up and feeding and moving slowly up the hill into the wind. The only chance I had was to go all the way around the section and go in and get ahead of them and hope that although they were down wind I could get a shot.

I made it around and there was a weed strip that was too rocky to cultivate that allowed me to craw 100 yards out into the field. I could see the herd and they were no longer moving up towards me and too far away for a good shot in the wind. As luck had it the buck I had lost to the day before showed up and he was 286 yards directly down wind. He could smell us and was getting spooky although he couldn't see me I was prone slinged up and steady and with him a few terraces below and facing me I took a neck shot and dropped him.

I was using my 61' pre 64 model 70 Fwt in 270 win. [Linked Image]

Nice work Southwind!

You can kill a pronghorn with a 270? Who'd a thunk!

Did the sound of the safety going off scare him? smile

When he heard I had a 270 he gave up without any further incident. grin

Good hunt Southwind. After a lot of the posts I've been reading lately, I wasn't sure if you could kill an animal if the rifle didn't have some type of Tupperware stock. I'm glad to see that it's still possible to successfully use a wood-stocked gun. wink
Never hunted your state, but I LOVE hunting speed-goats. They're remarkable little animals.

Close enough that qualifies. Great job, great rifle Winpoor. And love that 64 RGK, nice oinker.

By the way that ole goat is very tasty too. These farmland pronghorn taste a little different than their Wyoming cousins.

[Linked Image]
Same here vis whitetails! The ones that have been on corn have an unbelievable amount of WHITE kidney and heart fat!
My sage goat eating was just that, tasted like he lived on sage! Not much I will not try when it comes to eating! So fat an Elk has been number one on tastiest game meat! Out gator tail and froglegs are killer good as well! very best winpoor
I prefer the taste of pronghorns that have been feeding on something other than sagebrush.

Great freezer meat! We have a processor here that has been doing them for 40 years and is fantastic! Knows just how much hog fat to add to sausage, pulls backstraps and tenderloins then cubes the hams, fantastic job! My daughter grew up loving cube steak as well as beef cube steak, I put 3 or 4 up back in those days, a big 200 lb buck will cost you 175 bucks now by the time you get him home! You would be suprized at the 3 or 4 tree-hugger friends that have me nail them one each and every year, they do not hunt but love the meat! the very best winpoor

I still have another Winchester that needs to blast a deer this year. I think I will buy another deer tag and try for it with this 32-40. It is a first year production gun in excellent condition...

Not a super-big Winchester collector, but here is a cull buck, dropped at 60 yards, with a M1907 in .351. 180gr Hawk bullets over 2400, in QCC cases. The rifle is from the first full year of production.

Those fork horns eat much better than trophies. On the other hand, I once bagged a really old mulie that obviously had not been herding a harem. He had up to three inches of tallow in places. He was tender and tasty. He fell to a SG .30 Gov't.

Best,

Jack
Wifey is officiall born again hard! She busted this cull schimitar horn oryx about 15 minutes ago with her old Model 88 in 308. Shooting factory 150 grn corelokts! More in a bit I got an oryx to skin!!!!

I was hoping to be able to add to this post this year, but after not firing a shot last year I wasn't holding my breath. Got this rifle from Tim, Aka hunthard as a barreled action. 50s vintage 06 that was re-chambered to 300 Win Mag. I then got the McM Supergrade ADL style stock from Nathaniel IIRC. I did my home spun Gun Kote job on it, bedded it to the stock and added a Leupy 3.5-10 B&C scope. It shoots 180 grain partitions wonderfully. Took this cow, facing me at a shade over 200 yards. She went about 50 yards down hill and tipped over dead. Couldn't help but add the 97 41 mag and the local boy made knife to the pic too.

The other gun is a Winchester, or didn't you notice. Owning a Marlin and driving a Dodge truck have led me to wear a brown paper bag over my head more than once...

Nothing spectacular here but I pulled my very first deer rifle out of moth balls and decided to hunt it some this year. It's a model 70 Westerner .243 that I got for Christmas in 1982. These days I usually reach for something more exotic, but the .243 reminded me it hadn't killed a deer in about 15 years, so I've carried it some and shot this fat doe this evening at about 170 yards at last light with some 20+ year old PMC 100 gr SP factory ammo. I won't wait another 15 years to shoot another with it...

Claybird shooting practise came in handy with my well used pre64 30-06 and this pig last night. Burst out the scrub at full noise only 20 yards away, didn't have time to use the scope and just eyeballed the shoulder down the barrel. The finishing shot exited down the snout. Christmas pork is sorted!

+1!
SW and KW, I did send a cell pic to BSA's phone, I unloaded my belt rig carrying an old 45 Colt SAA and laid it right alongside the old '71 on the deer, full disclosure, I did think that was a monster doe in the fog, glad I had one remaining tag left for either buck or doe. grin
Good for you, Gunner!!!!!

Sounds cool!!!
gunner, full discloser accepted grin

What part of Oklahoma are you from and hunting?
Thanks men, it was a fun hunt indeed, SW, I was on Mil's land in SW Arkansas on this hunt, my farm is in S.E. Oklahoma in LeFlore Co.
My mom was born in Antlers over in Pushmataha County and my Dad's brother (my uncle) lived in Poteau for a while.

That is some thick country down there, even the ticks get ticks.
Small world eh SW? smile

Poteau is the next 'BIG' town way up to the North from me, and yes, very thick and mountainous here, that's why I use 170 gr Partitions in my 30-30 WCF, game shot are more on the fleet than standing broadside:)

It's based on the 220 Swift with the shoulder pushed back and the angle sharpened. Supposedly less trimming of brass versus the Swift.

You guys may have seen this one in the classifieds 2-3yrs ago as one of a matched set of custom Pre-64s. The other was a 240Wby. I bought the 240 first, then about a year later the owner of the 220 decided to sell it and contacted me about putting the set back together. I couldn't resist after seeing how well the 240 shot, so they are now both back together in my safe.

After your post with that nice buck I looked up the Wilson Arrow. Is there much difference between that, the Ackley improved and a std Swift? It seemed to me that the WA required a lot of effort to make the case initially.

I have two Pre64's and a Cooper Varmint in the Swift. It's a great cartridge. I wish the brass was easier to come by.
Posted By: TATELAW Re: 2015 Winchester kill page - 01/11/16
Just looking at the cases side by side, it looks like the Swift actually has more capacity than the Arrow. Unlike the AI, where the neck is shortened and the case blown out to make the sharper shoulder, the neck is actually lengthened on the Arrow and the shoulder pushed back to form the sharper angle. That's why you have to run Swift brass through an Arrow sizer prior to the first loading. It's not just a matter of fire forming with Swift ammo. Swift ammo will not chamber in the Arrow.

FWIW, using the same bullet and powder, 55 Hor SP and IMR 4064:

Swift - 39.0gr at 3860
Arrow - 37.5gr at 3795

both loads are in the 1/2-3/4 inch range. My Swift is a Pre-64 also.

I'm following RevMike and posting in the 2015 thread as this was taken in NM's 2015/16 Hunt Season.

White Sands Missile Range over the weekend. NM Once in Lifetime Hunt.
1959 M70 338 Alaskan, 225 Nosler Partition at 376 yards. My son is in the photo with me, was great to have him along for the hunt.

Handsome rifle..... whistle laugh
Congrats to Tatelaw,RevMike, and a big congrats to Razz on that awesome white sands hunt.

I have broken my own rule of reports without photos but I did fill my last two doe tags last weekend with the 61 270 fwt. We had a nice artic blast with 30 mph winds and wind chills right at 0 degrees F so I was a bit rushed to get the deer out without me being frozen to them.

A big congrats to all that have posted their Winchester kills here this season, I love seeing everyone's Winchesters hard at work in the field.

Why not look through your notes and/or your memories and write 'em down? I'd like to read the history of that rifle.
Posted By: ingwe Re: 2015 Winchester kill page - 01/12/16
Its not written down! cry

Some of it is in photographs....but I can tell you for sure the rifle has hunted all over Montana, twice in Africa and a few other places. Its killed dozens of deer- mule deer and whitetail, a couple elk, and African game up to and including gemsbok. Plus a pile of jackals......

What I've found is that if you start with what you can remember, you begin to remember even more. At least the part until the Jack Daniel's kicks in.
Southwind! Just go ahead and modify thread to include 2016 kills!!! smile

Since I am the op I will dub this the 2015-2016 hunting season Winchester kill page.

We may have to start a 2016-2017 later but might as well roll with it now.

And while talking about if rifles could talk I would love to hear Wally Johnson's Mod 70 375 tell it's stories.

What's the cut-off date, since I'll be chasing pigs with a Winchestger or two all summer long?

Amen to that! I think the only rest it got was the time it spent lost in the river.
Keep chasing, keep posting no cut off

Congrats Razz!

Went out after breakfast Thursday morning while at the ranch and got these for supper with my old model 12. Wasn't all I got either!!! Lots of fun. Matter of fact I found out that in order to see any nilgai, grab your shotgun and go quail hunting! smile.

I would like to hunt "The Blue Bull" someday. I hear they make great table fare.
Yes they do! Actually, Wednesday when we drove in we hadn't gotten 150 yards in the ranch. When we topped a little rise there was a nice young bull standing In the road!!! Young son was in front truck with ranch owner. He got out and was handed another buds 721 in 30/06. 180 grain accubonds. Rested on truck door and proceeded to make a measured 250 yard lung shot! He was trying for spine but didn't quite aim high enough. Bull went I to the thickest part of the oak motte. Mebbe 75-100 yards and laid down. We found him in about 10 minutes. and a well placed coup de grace finished him. If he were bigger I doubt we'd have been that lucky. Tracked one over a mile and a half one time before we got him. Good eating!!!! They can pack some lead!

Nilgai is easily the best game meat Ive ever had...has its own unique flavor thats indescribable.
And the younger the bull or preferably a cow is the best!!!! Big bull ain't too bad. Sometimes Ya just gotta run it thru the tenderizer a time or two! laugh

A good candidate for the M70 375 H&H. It's on my list of someday. There are several critters I'd like to hunt in Texas, Aoudad, Axis and a Semitar horned Oryx to name a few.
Posted By: tmitch Re: 2015 Winchester kill page - 01/17/16
Looks like a great time there KW. And some good critters to eat! You're gonna have to carry some ball loads for your M12 for when you flush those Nilgai.
This one was a good 200 yards from me when I spotted him. I was able to get under some cover and make my way the 3/4 of a mile back to cabin for a rifle. Came back and tracked him across the place. He made his way to the neighbors place.

My affair with the Nilgai is a bit Hemingwayesque. Or maybe Herman Melville. LOL! It's like when I finally connect with the old Blue Bull going down there just won't be the same. A land of beyond....... He always affords me that small glimpse. Each time the odds get better!!!

"A vision to seek, a beckoning peak......"

wink.

Sometime you may need to shoot an elk and see just how good a prime piece of red meat can actually be. I don't care about the elk body, it is just meat, but that tenderloin in the back is unbeatable...
