Recently shipped a .22 rifle I sold and wanted insured @ $550. UPS Store could not accept it at all. Fedex wanted $135-$175. USPS shipped it, Priority Mail, for $71.

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

I just shipped a rifle for $24. Now I had to go to the UPS hub but it's only 10 minutes from me.

IIRC, it's handguns that require the use of FedEx Express. Long guns should still be normal FedEx.
I use USPS for Rifles but I understand your guy prefers FedEx.
