Interesting that the 1942 War Department shotgun manual shows a gun with checkered stocks and a hunting scene on the receiver - like in the Spiegel catalog -

1936 Spiegel Fall & Winter - lists a Marlin Scope and offers it on a number of Savage/Stevens rifles - all listed as drilled & tapped for scope block even if ordered without the scope - even the 99 EG and 23AA Sporter.
