There is no way to get back to the forum you are on from the bottom of the thread page, i.e., you have to go all the way to the top.
This is my only objection to the new format. I haven't had any of the other problems you mention.
I used to get back to the top by clicking on the 'hop to' button but it doesn't work for that any more. I now use the home key on my keyboard. I seldom use a cell phone to read 24hr so I don't know what would work on it.
