Actually the no letter prefix began in 1968. Earlier ones that year were ADxxxxx, then they transitioned to 68 xxxx and retained this system to about '73, then began the first two -100 system until bought out and changed to Remingtons marking system.

Sometimes poop happens. I have a 39A Mountie clearly marked with a serial # 1Cxxxxx. It was perhaps a mis strike of an AC (67), but the leg of the a is perfectly vertical making a perfect 1, which leads me to think an employee was screwing with the inspector and got away with it. There is no trace of the other leg from an A, nor is there any remnant of the cross bar.??
