Sequential port fuel injection and/or direct injection, along with better engine management has helped extend engine life tremendously. Too much fuel, as in carburetors, or even throttle body injection was a recipe for bore wash, or detonation if too lean. Then they went and screwed it all up with extended oil changes, plastic oil pans and valve covers which created condensation and sludge formation.
