I have a pre-War Model 70 in .25-06, certainly not original. At age 15 in the summer of 1964, I saved a little money from part-time work. $72.50 of it went to buy a Model 70 in .30-06. Bore had some light pitting, but it shot pretty well and I shot it a lot. In the spring of '65, a gunsmith chambered a Douglas 26" varmint-weight barrel in .25-06 and fitted it to the action. This was several years before Remington commercialized the cartridge, though I bought a box of Remington .25-06 ammo around 1972 to see if it would work in my gun. Worked perfectly, no headspacing or other problems. I'm not much of a .25-06 fan anymore, but it was really a popular wildcat in the 'sixties. I still have the rifle. It's fitted with a 10X Unertl. Remains very accurate despite lots of rounds through it.
