Not necessarily. Depends on the individual and how the rifle fits him. And the eye relief on the scope.

I've always used that rule of thumb, particularly with the bigger bores and of course with scopes with decent eye relief. I read it somewhere a long time ago and since using that technique, I've never had an issue, even with a 416 Rigby.
