I just removed the stock to look at it. For lack of a better way to describe it, it is ribbed. It has several structural transverse ribs in the barrel channel. A few inches forward of the action screw is a rib that is higher than the others. When you tighten down the action screw, that rib supports the barrel. If it needs more support forward of that, I have no idea how to go about it.
