The man who made the nifty Damascus steel knife with mammoth ivory handle I posted here a while back told me that anything with elephant ivory can be a pain to own or especially sell because of all the regs. You need to be able to prove it's legal any time the gummint sees it. Applies to everything from knives to pianos. He goes to a lot of trade shows with his scrimshaw and has seen stuff siezed. He likes the mammoth ivory because there's no controls and it's nice stuff.

I prefer some sort of ebony, but have read the oil in it can be a pain when glueing it.
