I'd say that a flimsy plastic stock could be a deciding factor for me. Also an ugly one.

Now I'd take a rifle with a decent looking plastic stock without an overly flexible forearm though. And I'd like a somewhat attractive action even on a budget rifle. But that's just me I guess.

For a hunting/target rifle on a budget though, I'd probably be more likely to buy a Savage or Ruger American than some old military rifle with one of those giant safeties that makes you mount a scope a foot above the barrel.
And unless I was just looking for a 30-06 or 8x57 for some reason, they normally wouldn't be at the top of my shopping list.

Edit: I think I got confused which thread I was posting on.
I'd say yes, go ahead and get the 6.5 CM.
It has surpassed the Swede, the .260, and the 7-08 in ease of ammo acquisition. And for me, along with being more powerful than a .243 and kicking less than a .270 or a .308, that would make it the obvious choice.
It's the modern day 30-30 with more range.
