I'm on a budget, and I like to shoot, so I use the 34gr. HPs sold by Midsouth as their Varmint Nightmare Extremes. They sell them in 500 ct. boxes for under $45/500. Using them, and 1680, you can shoot cheaply enough, and 1680 works well in my .17 Hornet as well as the .22 Hornet. You get a LOT of loads out of an 8lb. jug.
I like the Hornet specific bullets of 40-46gr., too, but for the majority of my plinking/shooting, I use those 34gr. hollow points and they shoot really well for being whiffle-bullets.
I don't worry much about range, as I have other cartridges/rifles, for longer ranging needs.
If you try 1680, DO use a Lee Factory Crimp die, 1680 is a pretty slow powder and needs a good crimp to burn cleanly. That will help. It's good stuff, though.
