My wife (now) lived in Anchorage at the time. She and her sister both worked for Alaska Airlines. They'd taken a trip to WA for the state fair in Puyallup which is really a big deal. They got trapped in WA for a week before they could get home. Unlike the passengers in the OP, they had to pay for their own room and board while there. It got kind of expensive.
