18 miles out last contact? Maybe descending through precip/fog and sudden icing? Sounds like pilot got real busy real fast, whatever went wrong, and had no chance to call it in.
Thought the same. That, or the pilot had a sudden medical condition. Kinda surprised that they don't fly with a copilot?
