I had one that had all kinds of gouges and scratches. Took 0000 steel wool with some car rubbing compound and very gently rubbed off the sheen. Most of the scratches disappeared along the way. Now it is a nice matte finish. Work slowly, check often for your desired sheen. It took probably 30 minutes.
