Have somebody else do it.
I use an old version of Paintshop Pro from way back when it was shareware and fairly priced. Then it was bought up by a mercenary software company. Today I'd Google 'free photo editor" and read the reviews. For making an avatar you don't need much so look for easy to use rather than how many clever things it can do.
