Looks like decadent timber to me. Ought to log them bastards off long ago.
My entire house is framed in old growth redwood. From the foundation timbers to the roof decking and wood slat floors.
That is some seriously cool wood, eh?
Have you ever seen a clean enough end cut to count growth rings per inch? Some of that old stuff is really tight grained.
