If the guts in a 2 1/2-8X rifle scope are as tough as the 2 1/2-8X pistol scope they can certainly handle recoil. My .454 broke about a dozen scopes until the second vari-x 2 1/2-8X32. It was never dialed after sighting in, but held zero for thousands of full throttle rounds.
