That's an alligator snapper from somewhere down south. I have seen a snapping turtle considerably bigger than the one in the OP's picture well into Canada, in Eagle Lake near Dryden. That sucker was amazing. Bigger than any snapper I had ever seen and easily weighed over 100 lbs. That turtle would normally take it's last breath for the year some time in late October or early November, and not breathe again until some time in May, 6 months or a little more later! The place it would choose for hibernation probably would not get all that cold, maybe 32-36 degrees, but that's a long time to be that cold and not breathing. They need oxygen to generate some heat to support even their minimal body functions.
