For those that might have a slight interest in the 30-06s history, here you go...
The cartridge was adopted by the military, and quickly went into production in civilian(Sporting)form.
We are only interested in the sporting rounds, as the Winchester model of 1895, the last levergun ever to be designed by J. Browning, was chambered specifically for the 30-06.in the year 1908.
Inaugaral sporting rounds included the 150, 180, and 220 gr. bullets. According to ballistics of the time, the 150 reached approx. 2700fps, the 180 approx. 2400fps, and the 220, approx. 2300fps, or the identical velocity of parent 30-03, which was also loaded with a 220gr. bullet, and was also chambered in the 1895.
Hopefully such plain english will be understood by all.
The first sporting 30-06 rounds were loaded by Remington, Winchester, and Western. Match cartridges were also produced for the civian market.
While the model 1895 was fully capable of handling lighter bullets, many chose the heavier variety, finding them superior in close quarters against large game. Thus, the cartridge companies loaded 180 and 220 grain bullets-to answer the demand.
This is the documented history of the cartridge as it pertains to leverguns. Interestingly, the 30-06 continues with unabated appeal as a sporting round long after the military forgot all about it.
P.S. Note that the discussion is centered around sporting cartridges, not military ones.
P.S.S. The above abbreviated history is easily verifyable by anyone with a modicum of intelligence and motivation.
Final Note; Trolls need not reply.
