Have killed quite a few ducks (and wild pheasants) with 20-gauge 3" loads using #4 or #3 steel out to 35-40 yards--mostly jump-shooting smaller streams where was likely to run into either mallards or roosters. They worked fine within that range, in fact pretty much crumpled birds.
