I was trying to find the scene from Ulzana’s Raid when the cavalry detachment, guided by civilian scout Burt Lancaster and an Apache scout realize that they have been duped by Apaches they are pursuing. Lancaster doubles back to one side of their trail and the Apache Scout to the other, each accompanied by a trooper to send back to the main body to bring word if they cut the trail of the raiding Apaches’ string of horses.

Lancaster cuts the trail, sends back the trooper and rides hard to catch up to the Apache caballada. Getting within rifle range he dismounts and immediately shoots the first horse in the string, thereby immobilizing all the rest
