Exactly. The wolf population has been inbred for decades. They tried to introduce some from the mainland and they haven’t taken hold. Some fell into old mine shafts ( not modern mine shafts, ancient ones). There are only two of the original pack left and very few of the introduced ones. They won’t mingle either. The original two stay to one side of the island and the others stay on the other side. I guess some have even left the island across the ice. Too bad some of the moose don’t make their way back to the mainland. I hear that there have always been a few that have crossed back and forth from the island to the Keweenaw Peninsula. My grandfather had seen them before back in the 40’s and 50’s while deer hunting.
