Probably broke one of the holes out that the pegs on the spring fit into on the rear blade. Then it falls off and the elevator goes with it. They’re a cast part cast out of some type of pot metal type substance and pretty easily broken. I replaced at least 3 a week for a lot of years.
An aperture rear will keep it from ever happening again and still keep the trim lines of your rifle.
