A neighbor who saw a fair bit of action during WWII claimed it was as close to real life as any movie he had seen. He claimed that at 20 years old ideas of Liberty, justice and freedom didn't mean much but the concept of getting to the next town "before the Germans left with all the booze, broads, and loot" was very understandable. He also claimed his unit was full of oddballs and misfits so always got the worst assignments as higher ups didn't care if they came home.

It is one of my favorite movies, so many went on to be seen in other films. Anyone recognize Uncle Leo from Seinfeld?
