Let's not forget those highways, especially the big ones, are to assist businesses in populated areas get goodies from the non-populated areas. Folks in them big cities ain't gonna grow enough wheat on the rooftop gardens to make enough bread to supply the high rise condo dwellers below.
They're also so mom, dad, madison, and jake, can drive from MN to WA to see how the protests on the coast are going while they enjoy the scenery of the West.

I always wonder about doing something along those lines. I mean, it's kind of the only bargaining chip "we" ruralites have in negotiations with the municipality run States.
If this part of Cali only sold beef to Red States/counties. And all that hay that goes out of here on semis, maybe if it wasn't sent to the rich folks for their horses, or to the dairies for their milk, or worse loaded into shipping containers to go to China, how would that affect them there.
I remember the farmers here driving to DC once. And saw similar in Euroland too, blocking traffic etc to negotiate better terms for their goods.
