I do not know where you're headed for your elk hunt but my longest shot ever for elk was about 225 yards while hunting the edge of a burn within the Bear Lodge Mountains of Wyoming. My elk rifle is a Savage levergun in .308 shooting plain 180 grain soft tip ammo. Most of my shots are more like 85 to 150 yards at most. I always shoot twice into the chest organs for maximum damage and quick kill.

The 300 MAG is a big gun to shoot well. If muzzle jump is a concern, I suggest sending your BLR to Michigan for MagnaPorting. No ugly device to thread on nor extra loud report for your eardrums to deal with. MagnaPorting does not even mar the blueing!
