No question his gun was in his hand when he approached Rittenhouse. It appeared it was pointed directly at Rittenhouse at point blank range. Based on what had already happened to Rittenhouse he would have been a fool not to shoot.
There is no doubt, based on video evidence, those sonsabiches chasing him were going to do great bodily harm to him, and possibly kill him.
