Wayne should have won the Academy for his portrayal as Ethan Edwards. By far his best on screen performance.
There is a reason he named one of his sons Ethan.
In the first place he should have been named John Ethan Wayne but the Duke's best friend John Ford didn't like that idea because to every Wayne-child he gave a coffee mug with the initials of the child's name as a gift and because they didn't like the word created in this way they named his youngest son Ethan John Wayne and not John Ethan Wayne.
