I read "Something of value" for a book report in 11th grade early eighties--ish, it really made you feel like you were there, the details, the tragedy, I always wonder how he knew so much about it..I guess I know now. He lived it, or at least a small amount. I remember trying to give the verbal report in front of my classmates, little hick logging town in WA, most stared blankly at me while I explained what a MauMau was, or tried too. After that I devoured everything Africa I could, I swore I was going to return to SA (born there in Pretoria) and be a Game Control Officer cropping elephants and rogue buffs. When "Uhuru" came out we were living in Pretoria, Mom and Dad read it...big mistake. Scared mom and made her want to leave SA.
