as for the 17 HMR I personally wouldn't use it, they are deer, not elk. I'd opt for the HM2 version in a short action. it's be lighter and not burn near the same amount of powder, plus it's milder on your shoulder. some guys don't care about that but I do. get a good fixed 24x scope, you'll thank me later
