I have each and have hunted with both styles. While the 20" carbines tend to swing quicker, I think its generally agreed on that the 24" barrel "hangs" better on the should as the extra 4 inches of barrel help to balance the rifle once its lifted and leveled for sighting. Its a subtle difference, but I notice it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the looks of the carbines much more. Not to mention they carry through the woods easier. I have a deluxe carbine that out shoots all other 71s I've owned (rifle or carbine)... so given that example, I'd say the loss of 4" of barrel doesn't necessarily have an affect on accuracy.
