The gas operated Beretta's are pretty tame in the recoil department. Of much larger concern than recoil is gun fit. If your son is to be competitive the gun must fit perfectly which is tough to do unless your shotgun has adjustable buttstock and comb. Consider trading the kickoff system for a Gracoil system - in addition to taming recoil it will give you a great deal of buttstock adjustment. Also, a longer sight plane than you will find on many sporter shotguns will be helpful in trap ... think 30" +. If you have some $ to invest, consider an A400 setup for trap.

I have a Beretta A390 with 20K + trap loads through it which is still going strong and am a fan of Beretta's.
