In areas where elk winter, many of the fences are made to take down when they move in. The wires can be easily detached from the posts and dropped on the ground. It saves a lot of repair and also keeps the elk from getting tangled in the wire. The most common that I've seen is using wood posts. They drive in 2 staples/wire, 1 above the other an inch apart and only drive them in half way. The wire goes between the staples and they just drop a big headed nail through the staples to hold the wire in place.
