Your OP inquiry is about diesel engines. I like our 2002 Duramax a lot, especially with the Allison and on the highway. But, with regard to overall performance and durability, it cannot hold a candle to the 2001 Cummins. Seems to me that diesels in general have gone somewhat downhill not long after those.
