My point being that we are not that far removed from that era if you consider that you could converse with my father today about the fact that he may have been able to talk to people that remembered the last of the Revolutionary War vets.

That's my favorite way to learn history.
I love to hear the old folks 90+ talk about details that you would have a hard time finding in any history book. They remember what it was like and what would normally go overlooked. It does make the last couple hundred years seem shorter when looked at that way doesn't it?
