Rewatched this, saw it a few years back based on Jim In Idaho's recommendation. The movie is based on a book and supposed to be basically factual.

A 150 man company of Irish Army Infantry many still using Enfields was sent to the Belgian Congo in 1961 on a UN peace keeping mission. They were attacked by Congolese soldiers who were led by French Mercenaries. They outnumbered the Irish 20 to one.The Peace Keeping Force calls for reinforcements were pretty much ignored by the UN for political reasons. They surrendered after several days of fighting when they ran out of ammo. They were then imprisoned for a month. When they returned to Ireland they were accused of cowardice and told they would be individually court- martialed for cowardice if the incident was talked about. It.was covered up for almost 50 years.
