"A mom and her infant child who suffers from asthma were both kicked off an American Airlines flight prior to takeoff after the child reportedly removed his face mask.

“He had the plane turned around and had us escorted off to be met by police officers: Why? Wait for it… because my 2 year old was not properly wearing a mask,” the mom, Amanda Pendarvis, wrote on Instagram Monday.
Footage shows Pevardis seated with her toddler, who is sobbing uncontrollably and coughing, but still wearing the mask over his face.

“We were escorted off the plane as I was holding a mask over his little face. I genuinely don’t have words,” the mom said, adding that she never refused to wear a face mask.

A post from Pervardis explained they’d try to inform airline staff the boy, named Way, had asthma and couldn’t wear a mask.

“Mind you, Way is asthmatic. We showed him a negative Covid test Way had yesterday. Told him he has asthma & has never word [sic] a mask before. He did not care that this asthmatic child was literally hyperventilating,” she wrote.

Pevardis also described how flight staff “got on the intercom to say to the entire plane ‘I’m sorry for the delay but we are dealing with a non-compliant traveler.'”

In another recording, the mom is seen struggling to get the mask over the child’s face as he persistently refuses it.

After the travelers were kicked off AA flight 1284, they were met by three police officers waiting for them in the passenger boarding bridge.

"Hello, maybe we get flight attendant fired from @AmericanAir today?

My sweet friend’s 2 year old son was having an asthma attack and wouldn’t keep mask on (because he couldn’t breathe) - and they turned plane around and had police waiting to escort them off. A 2 year old."

The mom sarcastically thanked a flight attendant named “Carl” for his bravery in removing the 2-year-old menace: “Thank you for your bravery, Carl on Flight AA 1284…Really took a stance and got this monster off the plane.”

In a statement to the Daily Dot, an American Airlines spokesperson confirmed the incident took place as described.

“On Sept. 13, American Airlines flight 1284 returned to the gate prior to departure from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to deplane a party on board,” spokesperson Andrew W. Trull said. “Initial reports indicate the party refused to comply with crew member instructions to remain seated and wear a face mask securely over their nose and mouth. After agreeing to adhere to federal face-covering requirements, all individuals were rebooked for travel on the next flight to Colorado Springs (COS).”

American Airlines’ travel requirement policy regarding face masks states: “U.S. federal law requires that you wear a face covering at all times while indoors at the airport and on board your flight If you refuse to wear one, you may be denied boarding and future travel on American. You may also face penalties under federal law. These rules do not apply to children under 2, or if you have a disability that prevents you from wearing a face covering and meet the exemption requirements.”

The policy does note there are exemptions for customers with disabilities, however, it adds, “you must contact us at least 72 hours before you plan to travel and travel with documentation confirming a negative Covid test or recovery.”
