Americans are spoiled. We're used to having so much usable land and the ability to grow so much food. By contrast, central Africa is overwhelmed with people and they've long since outgrown their land's ability to support them. Each farmer has several sons and divides his land among them. Many farms are now under 5 acres and they keep breeding. Their land just can't support that many people. Then you get places like Zimbabwe. It was a very productive country with mostly white land owners. When Mugabe got power, he threw the whites out and gave the land to his war lord supporters who let the farms fall apart. It only took a few years before they went from exporting food to serious starvation.
