The left did not even hate President Nixon this much.
I think they hated him even more and with much less reason. The media did everything possible to get McGovern into the White House and didn't even come close. As a result, they forced Nixon's resignation instead. Nixon might have been better served by using Trump's strategy and employing the "Liar, liar, pants on fire" defense. GD
