If I'm not mistaken, they started making double action revolvers after purchasing an S&W factory in Brazil (or came into possession of said factory due to a temporary merger). As I recall, they just fired up the factory and started spitting out S&W revolvers with the Taurus name on them, or at least very close. The S&W design patents were all expired.

This is why early Taurus double action revolvers look and operate so much like old S&W revolvers.

Someone correct me if I've got that wrong, but that's my memory of it.
