Smallies have been my target species this summer. I live in the basin of a river system that runs from mid-Michigan out to Lake Michigan and I’ve been fishing a few local tribs all year but only a little on the big river.

A coworker has been obsessed with smallies in this basin longer than I have and pointed me toward a section of the big river that held large fish as well as northern. My son in law and I have been enjoying time on the water all summer so we headed out. It was a scorcher of a day and we drifted a few hours catching only three fish but two of the three were nice… 15” and bigger and my second was a decent one also.

We had to paddle hard to get out in time for me to run some errands and went through what I’m sure was the best pike water which also happens to be just a few minutes from my office so it’ll get more attention very soon.

Here’s pics; the Golden Hawk canoe has really been handy this summer Michigan is an awesome place to live if you love the outdoors!!

This was a personal best for my son in law who has grown into a fantastic fishing partner I’m super grateful for him:
