When I was growing up, there were a lot of red foxes around here, then they got scarce, supposedly because of the coyotes moving in. I went a number of years and never saw one. Lately though, there has been a resurgence in the red fox population. I have them on trail cam quite often. We don't have many grays, only a few of them around.
