I think we should praise the 99E as an inexpensive basis for making some cool custom 99's.

A factory 20" lightweight barrel .358W 1950s 99F would be my 'Savage 99 'Grail' gun.

My 99E with it's upgraded walnut furniture and 'lighten' barrel weights within 2 oz of my factory original .308W 1957 99F. However, the 99E has a steel stock bolt. If the 99E had an aluminum stock bolt like the 99F, I suspect the 99E would weight the same if not lighter. Still, best feel (in my hands), goes to the current version of the 99E.
