When I was probably 10 or 12 family went visiting to some real country folks. House was about like those you see on Gunsmoke, the ones with Chester. They had a hog pen maybe 60 or 70 feet from the house with a big old sow and a couple of shoats. Chickens were yard birds and a couple of us kids got to chasing them. One helicoptered over the hog fence and the sow just about caught it on the fly. Pinned that chicken down and started eating before it was dead. Chicken made a squalling sound I never heard before or since and it curled our toes. From then on we didn’t question grown ups about not getting in the hog pen.
