.357mag now is not bad with the loads available. 1970's .357 ammunition though is indeed pretty stupid. I'm not aware of heavy hardcast loads being widely commercially available back then.

I have never used it for bear defense but I can tell you that the 145 grain Winchester Silver Tip,which has been around a long time will exit on large wild boar going through the gristle plate on both sides.


I tested the 145 grain Silver Tip in 357 mag in 2008 and it was a dogged as far as penetration was concerned
