Everyone has his own favorite method. I learned one from the late Mel Smart (now Serengeti rifles) and he used pure Hope's Tung oil cut 50% with polyurethane and then thinned with either mineral spirits or turpentine. The idea was that the first few coats would soak into the wood and the others would build to the desired finish. I have done a few stocks with it and they have held up beautiful. If you like to use the slurry to fill pores, be careful as it can smear and kill the luster.
I have also used the French Red filler and it gives a certain look if you like it. Oil finishing a stock is a lot of work no matter the oil or method used.
