I've tanned a bunch of them at home. the leather is very thin and easy to tan/oil/break.

the hairs on tanned hides both fall out and break off (very brittle shafts).

assuming you get it off the animal and into salt to "set" the hair within 2 hours (really) you'll get a good result.
I've left them in salt for a year before I got around to re-wetting and tanning them.

they're not bullet-proof like a moose or bison hide but I really like them.

how they're not all running around the sage like naked, hairless Chihuahuas is beyond me!
