My girls, if they show any interest at all, will start with a .22LR and move up to a single loaded .30-30. Myself, shoot a .30-06, but am really leaning toward hunting the .30-30 mostly anymore. I shoot both well, but the .30-30 is so much more portable and much easier for a kid to handle with not a lot of recoil.
