That probably didn't help matters much. IIRC the Mexican Mauser was slightly shorter as it was designed for the 7x57, not the longer German 8mm. I knew the action rings were of a smaller diameter, and, as such, a bit lighter. This is why Cooper favored the Mex mauser for a Scout build.

I guess the ultimate "hunting mauser" would be to find a G33-40 that had already been sporterized, as that was a light as mausers ever got, I believe.
